Combined In Situ Chemical Oxidation and Aerobic Bioremediation for Site Closure

The Wakulla Food Mart site (formerly known as Suwannee Swifty #176) is an active retail fuel facility located in Crawfordville, Florida. Historical environmental investigation efforts at the site resulted in various remedial applications, including soil excavation/disposal, air sparging/vapor extraction, and most recently in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and combined ISCO/aerobic bioremediation (AB). The combined ISCO/AB included application of alkaline activated Klozur SP and Klozur CR injection events in February 2018 and April 2020. The injection completed in 2020 focused on MW-6R. Post active remedial monitoring (PARM) activities over several events reported petroleum-related constituents of concern at concentrations below respective groundwater cleanup target levels (GCTLs) in several monitoring wells. PARM monitoring continues for underground injection control zone of discharge (UIC ZOD) parameters, however the trends for total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolved sulfate (SO4) and sodium (Na) show consistent decline post injection. Data will be presented in graphic form and discussed regarding performance and implications for site closure.
Mr. Geoffrey Schaefer is a Project Manager and Senior Engineer with more than 26 years of experience performing and managing projects for Federal, State, Local, and private clients that include contamination investigations, transport modeling, groundwater tracer studies, remedial design, permitting, and construction/redevelopment for sites impacted by VOCs, SVOCs, metals, pesticides, PCBs, and emerging contaminants (particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances [PFAS] and 1,4-dioxane). Mr. Schaefer also has investigative research experience for university departments in a variety of disciplines, including the collection, chemical analysis, and data interpretation of a variety of samples including; radioisotopes, nutrients, geophysical parameters, trace level mercury and iron, phosphorous speciation, and volatiles, semi-volatiles, and pesticides.
